Greece update: Tuesday, 7 May, 2002
Health authorities in Greece have decided to allow re-opening of nurseries and educational institutions as the number of cases of heart and respiratory illness decline.
The illness has been identified as being caused by the Coxsackie-B virus. This is an entero-virus which means it is usually found in the gastro-intestinal tract and spread is commonly associated with overcrowded conditions and/or poor hygiene.
Travellers do not appear to have been at risk and the World Health Organisation has recommended that no restrictions be placed on travellers to or within Greece.
Nevertheless is essential for travellers at all times to pay attention to the simple rules of hygiene. Individual risks should be assessed in consultation with a general practitioner or a Travel Medicine doctor
