USA - Measles outbreak
11 April 2004
Passengers on four flights from Hong Kong to San Francisco and Seattle late last month have been exposed to toddlers from China who carried the measles virus. Measles is a highly infectious virus that can cause pneumonia, diarrhoea, encephalitis and death. The children were among a group of a dozen being adopted. Measles is not common in New Zealand due to a very effective vaccine, however there are around 5% of the population under 30 years old who do not have immunity against the disease, these people should have a vaccination against measles before they travel.
