HEPATITIS
B AND BLOOD BORNE DISEASES
The only vaccine-preventable sexually
acquired disease is Hepatitis B. The vaccine, H-B-Vax II or ENGERIX
B is generally given as a course over 6 months. Protection probably
lasts for more than 5 years. An accelerated course can be given
over 4 weeks but the duration of protection is less.
HIV and Hepatitis B can be spread
through any penetration of the skin therefore tattooing, acupuncture
and body piercing should be avoided. If medical attention is required,
ensure that sterile instruments such as new needles and syringes
are used. In may countries blood for transfusions is not screened
for viruses such as HIV, Hepatitis B and C.
Hepatitis B vaccination is also available
in the formulation of TWINRIX, which combines both hepatitis A and
B into one injection.
