His career path included working in Baragwanath Hospital in Soweto, then two and a half years in a hospital in Malawi followed by a posting in the United Kingdom. On returning to South Africa he returned to Baragwanath, then became Medical Director of a South African based international assistance company, before founding WORLDWIDE TRAVEL MEDICAL CONSULTANTS IN 1995. Involvement in travel medicine has taken him all over the world, providing insight into the practice of medicine in the global village.
He consults to a number of multinational corporations, missionary societies and humanitarian aid organisations and frequently lectures on topics related to travel medicine, his special interest being traveller health education.
Along with Dr Anwar Hoosen, Dr De Frey is responsible for the introduction of The Travel Doctor Group into Africa, integrating the WTMC group into The Travel Doctor Africa, to the benefit of the corporate and casual clients of both groups.
Dr Therese Maarschalk, Travel Health Consultant is a graduate of the University of the Orange Free State and subsequently gained qualifications in Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, Obstetrics and Anaesthesiology. She is presently researching the attitudes and beliefs of expatriates regarding malaria and malaria prophylaxis as part of her studies in Occupational Health.
Dr Maarschalk spent several years in Malawi, central Africa where she took responsibility for the Tuberculosis programme in the rural hospital she worked in. A stint in the United Kingdom was followed by seven years in private practice, with a special interest in woman and child health.
Ms Lyn Croote, Clinic Manager, qualified as a Critical Care Attendant (Paramedic) and worked in the Gauteng and Soweto area at the height of the pre-election violence that preceded the 1994 elections. She subsequently spent two years in Mali, West Africa where she was responsible for the health, safety, emergency and primary health care of approximately 1500 construction workers.
Prior to and following this period she toured and worked extensively and in 2000 became one of the first recipients of a Certificate in Travel Medicine in South Africa.
